Chapter 8

“DENYS, wake up. Please.” Aric held Denys tightly. What the hell had he been thinking, throwing himself in the path of that enormous horse? Aric kissed the top of Denys’s forehead, the skin hot under his lips.

“Aric…,” Georgia said softly, but Aric shook his head.

“Get away, Georgia. At least save yourself.” If she wanted him to leave Denys, it wasn’t going to happen. Denys was still alive―Aric could hear him breathing―and he would do everything in his power to make sure he stayed that way.

The horse was quiet. He couldn’t hear it. He glanced up, ready to bundle Denys into his arms and run. If he could just make it into the forest, they’d be safe. He wasn’t going to think about how fast that thing could probably run.

In his surprise, Aric loosened his grip on Denys.

“That’s what I was trying to tell you,” Georgia said. “It’s gone, and so is the fire. It’s as though it was never here.” She knelt down beside them. “Take a closer look at Denys. There’s no blood. I saw the horn go into him at least twice, but there’s no blood.”

“He put himself in harm’s way for me,” Aric said, not wanting to look. Not wanting her to be wrong. “He’s scared of horses, so that one must have been even more terrifying for him than it was for us. He could have died”—his voice cracked—“for me.”

“That’s what you do when you truly care about someone,” Georgia said. “He told me he wanted to protect you. I thought it was just words, but this proves it wasn’t.” She started to pull Denys’s shirt from his breeches.

“What are you doing?” Aric pushed her hand away. He didn’t want anyone else touching Denys. The strong emotion the thought invoked surprised him. When had he become so possessive?

“I’m checking to make sure he’s really not injured, of course.” Georgia rolled her eyes. “What else would I be doing? Honestly, Aric. Like I would even think of taking advantage of someone when they’re not conscious? What kind of woman do you think I am?”

“Sorry,” mumbled Aric. “I know you wouldn’t. I just… I’m worried about him.”

“I know, Aric.” Georgia glanced up at him, but moved out of his way. “So am I. You remove his shirt, then. Someone has to.”

She was right. Denys hadn’t wanted to take it off before, but it was the only way of making sure he was all right.

If he was, why wasn’t he awake yet?

Once Denys’s shirt was free of his breeches, Aric carefully pulled loose the undershirt he wore beneath. Once they were free, he eased them up to get a better look. “You’re right. There’s no blood.” He breathed a sigh of relief. “There’s no wound, either.” How could that be possible? Denys healed quickly, but this was beyond what had happened with the dagger.

He ran his fingers over Denys’s chest, lingering on the firm skin and well-defined muscles. Aric licked his lips. A smattering of fine dark hair covered the skin.
